Downes Piano Services

Downes Piano Services are specialists in piano restoration, overhauls, regulation, repairs, tunings and servicing. The business was formed in 1991 by Derek and Kathleen Downes after the closure of Alfred Knight Ltd. Piano Manufacturers, where Derek was the senior technician.

Derek has spent his entire working life, in excess of 40 years, making and restoring pianos. He progressed from humble beginnings as an apprentice, moving onto piano manufacturers of distinction where he was able to gain the many years of valuable practical and specialist technical experience needed, to now own and run his own business. Derek is a Technician Member of The Pianoforte Tuner's Association, Membership No. T1108.

Kathleen studied piano tuning at the London Guild Hall and also manages the runing and day to day operations of the business. All enquiries and appointments should be directed through Kathleen who is also able to put you in touch with Piano Teachers or help arrange lessons in your area.

Whilst our tuning appointments are mostly in London we do cover North, East, South and West London as well as parts of Kent and Essex for restoration services to upright and grand pianos. We provide a wide range of services from fixing sticky keys through regulation to full action and keyboard restoration. We sell new and reconditioned upright pianos and are also able to offer an exceptional French Polishing Service.
